MY CHILD HAS JUST RECEIVED A DIAGNOSIS
A diagnosis can bring answers. But it can also bring a whole new set of questions.
Perhaps your child has recently received an ADHD or autism diagnosis. You may feel relieved to finally have some answers, but also unsure what happens next.
What does the diagnosis mean for your child? What should you tell school? What support might they need? And how can you help them at home?
You may also be waiting for further assessments or beginning to recognise difficulties that haven't yet been formally identified.
You don't have to work everything out at once.
At Sladen Advisory, I help parents understand their child's individual needs, make sense of the information they've received and identify practical ways to support them at home and in education.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A DIAGNOSIS?
A diagnosis can help explain aspects of your child's experiences, but it doesn't automatically tell you which strategies will work for them.
Every child is different.
A helpful starting point is to consider:
Understanding your child: How does their neurodivergence affect their everyday experiences, strengths and challenges?
Supporting them at home: What adjustments might help with routines, emotional regulation, communication or sensory needs?
Working with school: Does the school understand their needs, and are appropriate adjustments and support in place?
Listening to your child: How do they feel about their diagnosis, and what would help them feel understood?
A diagnosis can be the beginning of a better understanding of your child — not a label that defines them.
